Dr. Nini Rodgers, author of Ireland, Slavery and Anti-Slavery 1612-1865

Wednesday, February 11th at 7pm
at Glucksman Ireland House

Ireland,SlaveryandAntiSlaveryL.jpgDr. Nini Rodgers taught as a lecturer in modern history at Queen’s University Belfast until her recent retirement. She is currently an honorary senior research fellow in the School of History and Anthropology. Her book Ireland, Slavery and Anti-slavery 1612-1865 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) compares slavery in Africa with slavery in early Ireland, discusses the Irish connections of famous ex-slaves, Olaudah Equiano and Frederick Douglass, and finishes with an attempt to assess the relationship between slaves and Irish immigrants in the US. An Irish Times review describes the scope of this work as ‘impressive’ and as ‘an invaluable platform for future studies of Ireland and the black Atlantic.’

Introduction by Dr. Eileen Reilly.

Presented in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame. Co-sponsored by the NYU Atlantic History Seminar.
